🔥 Close Before You Doze 🔥
When you go to bed tonight, remember one simple habit that can make a life-saving difference: sleep with your bedroom door closed.
In a house fire, time is not on your side. Fires grow fast, smoke spreads quickly, and conditions can become deadly in minutes. But a closed door acts as a powerful barrier against heat, flames, and toxic smoke.
Research shows that during a fire:
🚪 Outside the bedroom: Temperatures can reach over 1,000°F
🛏 Inside a closed bedroom: Temperatures can stay around 100°F
That closed door can:
• Slow the spread of fire and smoke
• Keep temperatures survivable longer
• Give firefighters more time to reach you
👨👩👧👦 Parents — make this part of your nightly routine. Check that your children’s bedroom doors are closed before everyone goes to sleep.
Also talk to your kids about what to do during a fire. Children often hide when they’re scared. Teach them never to hide in a closet, under a bed, or behind furniture.
Instead, teach them this simple plan:
🔔 Alarm – Your smoke alarm wakes you up
🚪 Door – A closed door helps block smoke and heat
📱 Phone – Call 911 and tell them where you are
🪟 Window (if trapped) – Go to a window, stay low, signal firefighters, and wait for rescue
You won’t have time to think during a fire. Simple habits practiced every night can save lives.

🔥 Fire is FAST. Time is NOT on your side. 🔥
Your first line of defense in a home fire is simple—but incredibly powerful: closed bedroom doors and working smoke alarms.
🚪 Sleep with your bedroom door closed. A closed door can slow the spread of heat, flames, and toxic smoke—keeping conditions inside your room survivable longer.
🚨 Make sure you have working smoke alarms. They give you the early warning you need to wake up and get out.
🗺️ Have an escape plan. Every member of your household should know at least two ways out and where to meet outside.
⚠️ Parents: make closed bedroom doors part of your children’s nightly routine. Before you go to bed, check that your child’s bedroom door is closed—just like you check that the lights are off or the doors are locked. This simple habit can make a life-saving difference if a fire occurs while your family is sleeping.
In a home fire, you may have as little as 4 minutes to escape.
Those minutes matter.
✅ Close your door.
✅ Check your smoke alarms.
✅ Practice your escape plan.
Every second counts. ... See MoreSee Less
