It is by design, not a mistake. When you call 911 for chest pain, a fire engine may arrive first, lights on, without an ambulance in sight. This scenario is one of the most frequently asked questions about our collaborative EMS system. The explanation lies in Jackson's intentional deployment of fire apparatus to high priority οΏΌmedical calls, a practice known as tiered response or medical first response.
Jackson firefighters are cross-trained as emergency medical responders, EMTs, or paramedics, and the engine is equipped with medical equipment, including oxygen, an AED, bleeding control supplies, and on advanced units, cardiac monitors and medications. The crew that arrives first often initiates assessment, CPR, defibrillation, and other time-critical care minutes before the ambulance arrives.
In cases of cardiac arrest, those minutes are crucial in determining the outcome. Survival rates decrease with every minute without CPR and defibrillation, which is why our system prioritizes having a fire crew at the door within four minutes. ... See MoreSee Less
